If you’re looking for a peaceful, natural setting for your engagement photos—without the crowds—Rockefeller State Park is one of my go-to locations in Westchester for an engagement session. For Brittany and Nick’s session, we took full advantage of the open trails, warm light, and scenic backdrops this location has to offer. It felt relaxed, effortless, and genuinely fun, which is exactly what you want when documenting this chapter of your story.

Their Story: When Timing Is Everything

Brittany and Nick first met back in 2018 through Nick’s brother, and their paths kept crossing thanks to mutual friends. But it wasn’t until they reconnected at a wedding, about two and a half years ago, that something shifted. Sometimes it really is all about timing.

From the first few frames, it was clear how naturally they connect. They were incredibly easy to photograph—comfortable with each other, open to movement and direction, and fully present. That kind of chemistry makes for a strong gallery full of genuine moments.

Bringing Personality to the Session

They brought along their dog, Cali, which is always a great way to add comfort and personality to a session. If your dog is a big part of your life, they absolutely deserve a place in your engagement photos. Cali handled it like a pro: curious, well-behaved, and photogenic.

Rockefeller State Park is one of the few locations in the area that’s pet-friendly. While many couples want to include their dog, some locations have strict rules or require special permits. That’s why we always plan dog-friendly sessions with intention.

If you’re bringing your pup along, be sure to pack water, a lint roller (or two), and consider asking a friend or family member to come along to help with the leash between shots. For Brittany and Nick, having Cali there felt true to their everyday life. I loved how incorporating her in the session added an extra layer of authenticity.

Choosing Rockefeller State Park

Brittany knew early on she didn’t want to do the same locations she’s seen over and over in the tri-state area. Rockefeller State Park checked all the right boxes: peaceful, scenic, and a little off the beaten path.

The park offers wide open fields, wooded trails, and enough room to move without feeling watched or rushed. The park is massive, offering 55 miles of trails, with several different entrance points and scenic views, so the vibe you are envisioning can slightly change which part of the park you go to. We started the session an hour and a half before sunset time to take advantage of the soft golden light as it filtered through the trees.

If you’re considering Rockefeller State Park for your own engagement session, I recommend weekday evenings, especially in spring or fall, to avoid foot traffic and make the most of the changing landscape.

Engagement Style: Elevated and Comfortable

Brittany’s white dress from Tuckernuck was the perfect balance of classic and playful. It photographed beautifully and moved well as we walked through the open fields. For engagement photos, choosing an outfit that feels elevated but comfortable is key. When you’re comfortable and confident in your clothes, it’s easier to relax and be yourself on camera.

Nick kept it simple and clean, which was the perfect pairing to Brittany’s outfit. It allowed her and the golden hour light to really stand out. I always suggest outfits that complement each other without matching too closely, and they nailed it.

The best engagement sessions feel like an extension of your relationship—not a photoshoot you’re performing for. Whether that means choosing a meaningful location, bringing your dog, or simply being open to movement and candid moments, it’s about creating space for connection.
